There were actually four flags of the Confederate government. They evolved much the same as ours as more states were added to the Confederacy. They were referred to as the Stars and Bars and were similar to the Union flag, Old Glory. In that era of poor communication on the battlefield, the flag told soldiers where their forces were. Because of the similarity of the Confederate and Union flags, troops were often confused and thus arose the Confederate battle flag shaped with an "X", the one in question today. This flag was never the flag of the Government but was actually the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia and two other military entities. Any use of it by racist organizations such as the KKK is a defamation of its historical military significance.
