'Gorgeous George' is a great character in an era of faceless bland politicians, an erudite, pugnacious and captivating, self-educated speaker. He is always fascinating to listen to in a radio show or debate, particularly that one on stage with Christopher Hitchens, which brought him to most Americans' attention. Also his appearance in front of the Senate House Committee in the US was a tour de force. He never fails to raise a smile in this respect, even if you might not agree with what he is saying.
However, he has angered or disgusted most people in the UK by his shameless involvement with Saddam Hussein and the Miriam fund, his cat suited appearance on Celebrity Big Brother, his anti-Israeli and borderline anti-semitic stance, his tacit support for Assad in Syria, his work for the Iranian propaganda Press TV news channel, and his blatant political opportunism (first a committed Labour politician, then when kicked out suddenly an ultra left wing Respect politician, then sucking up to muslims for votes).
In many ways he seems a tragic figure, a very talented man who should have inspired people at the head of one of the great political parties, but who wasted himself on supporting dubious, undemocratic and often repressive Middle Eastern regimes. But as there's nothing he likes more than arguing about anything and everything in a contrary manner, he probably still enjoys himself.
