No Ideas

It is a common phenomenon that Asian students lack training in independent

thinking. A well-known example used to refiect how students in

the Orient are educated goes as follows. An instmctor from a Westem

country was shocked when she was observing a class in an Asian country.

In a drawing class, the teacher demonstrated the way to draw a cat, and

then she asked the students to draw one, too. To the observer's surprise,

she found every student drew an identical cat as the teacher did. This does

not happen in the classrooms of the westem world.

The teachers in most Asian countries are rather authoritative. Students

seldom challenge what the teachers have said even though they may find

something questionable. In the long mn, students become passive leamers.

They are not trained to be critical thinkers. Many Asian students who

pursue higher education in westem countries find it difficult to adjust to

the classroom interaction among classmates and teachers. 'Some NNSs

felt that they lacked training in critical thinking, which they thought was

one of the most important academic skills promoted in Canadian graduate

school' (Morita 2000: 299). One of the students Morita interviewed

stated, 'I felt I was lost because it was really difficult for me to think

critically... I just couldn't analyze things critically. Then I realized that 1was not educated to be a critical thinker in my home country. So basically

I was just accepting everything I read...' (Morita 2000: 299).

Update:

Many of the contestants I coached faced the same problem as the student

Morita interviewed. As I mentioned previously, the students and I

discussed and brainstormed many topics together in the process of training.

Few students could contribute their ideas in a constructive manner.

Update 2:

And, out of the fragmentary comments they made, I could barely find

something critical. Many of them would just sit there passively waiting

for me to say something. They were educated to be only receivers.

It is not easy to reverse the situation.

Update 3:

I employed the method of asking

questions to guide them to think and to join in on the brainstorming

sessions. For instance:

Update 4:

T: 'What's the most unforgettable experience in your life?'

S: 'I don't know. I can't think of anything.'

T: 'Have you ever been hurt and sent to the hospital?'

S: 'No, never.'

T: 'Have you ever been to other countries?'

Update 5:

S: 'Yes. I went to Japan with my family.'

T: 'Did you have a good time?'

S: 'Yeah, it was an eye opening experience.'

T: 'Why?'

S: 'We went to Disneyland. It was so marvelous...'

Update 6:

Then the questioning would jog the student's memory and he would talk

more about what he saw and what he did in Japan and why it was his

most unforgettable experience. Asking questions is a very effective way

to help them develop and organize their own thinking.

Update 7:
