'Bette Davis Eyes' won two Grammys ('Song of the Year' and 'Record of the Year') and was the biggest hit of 1981 (#1 on Billboard's charts for nine non-consecutive weeks).

It was just one of those 80s songs... lol. There was no rhyme or reason why things were a hit back then. lol. I would not say it was big in fashion the way Madonna's songs/videos were, or the Bangles or the Go-Go's songs were. The video was kind of interesting. I was a small kid when this came out, so I could be wrong.
