This is an intense rivalry that began almost 100 years ago, when Babe Ruth was traded to the Yankees. The 2 original rivalries in MLB, however were the Giants-Dodgers (new York vs. Brooklyn) which began at the turn of the 20th century and Cubs-Cardinals which has bee going since the 1800s.

Because it's been going on for a long time, and both teams have had consistently good records, and they're both from big cities that are fairly close to each other.
