What is a U.S. presidential candidate';s home state?

Mitt Romney, for example, has homes in NH and UT, but hasn't lived in NH since leaving the Governor's office in 2007. In 2012, however, it was Mitt Romney (R-MA)

And then Hillary lives in Arkansas, but is considered to be from NY, because she was a Senator there some years ago

Update 2:

During the 2011 GOP primaries, Newt Gignrich was considered to the former Speaker from Georgia, even though he's lived in VA for decades

Update 3:

But Romney's home at the time of the 2012 election was NH and UT

Romney was Governor of MA not NH.

He lived in MA as a primary residence for 30 years.
