    .

Almost all unit conversions are a simple multiplication

(or division) by one or more "conversion factors".

The conversion factor is determined by the number of units in one measurement system that are equal to one unit in the other measurement system. For example:

there are 60 seconds in one minute,

..... so the conversion factor is

60 to convert between seconds and minutes; and

there are 100 cm in one metre.

..... so the conversion factor is

100 to convert between cm and m.

to convert 2 minutes to seconds we multiply by 60, thus:

    ...... 2 minutes = 2 minutes x 60 seconds per minute

    = 120 seconds

note that when the unit gets smaller, the number gets bigger

    300 seconds can be converted to minutes by dividing by the conversion factor;

    300 seconds = ( 300 / 60 ) minutes

    = 5 minutes

note that when the unit gets bigger, the number gets smaller.

    2.5 metre = 2.5 metre x 100 cm per metre = 250 cm

again note how the number has increased (from 2.5 to 250) when the units got smaller (changing for metre to centimetre)

so how would we convert 0.8 cm to metre?

..... there are 100 cm in one metre so we either

    multiply by 100, or we

divide by 100 if you are not sure which to use, try it both ways and ask yourself which looks most likely

    either 0.8 cm = 0.8 x 100 = 80 metre (does that sound right??)

    or ..... 0.8 cm = 0.8 / 100 = 0.008 metre

(I hope the latter attempt seems better because it is correct and the previous attempt was not).

So how about your specific problem:

6 cm / min : let's convert the cm to m first (so divide by 100)

    6 cm / min = ( 6 / 100 ) m/min = 0.06 m / min;

now there are 60 second in one minute so we either multiply by 60 or we divide by 60: I'll try both, and you can decide which one seems reasonable:

    0.06 m / min = ( 0.06 / 60 ) m/s = 0.001 m/s ..... or maybe:

    0.06 m / min = ( 0.06 x 60 ) m/s = 3.6 m/s

I am sure you will see which one is wrong as soon as you ACTUALLY THINK about the numbers and what the units represent.

You could do it with a series of brackets. The brackets on the right cancel with the brackets on the left.

    6 cm/min [1 meter/100 cm] * [1 minute / 60 seconds.]

    6/(100 * 60)

    6 / 6000

    1/ 1000

    0.001 m/s

    multiply by 1

    multiply 6cm/min by (1m/100cm)

    to get 6m/100 min

    multiply by 1 again

    multiply 6m/100 min by (1min/60sec)

    to get 6 m / 60 00 sec

    or 1m/1000 s

    or 0.001 m /s
