The Wind Sleepers Hilda Doolittle(1886-1961)

Whiter

than the crust

left by the tide,

we are stung by the hurled sand

and the broken shells.

We no longer sleep

in the wind--

we awoke and fled

through the city gate.

Tear--

tear us an altar,

tug at the cliff-boulders,

pile them with the rough stones--

we no longer

sleep in the wind,

propitiate us.

Chant in a wail

that never halts,

pace a circle and pay tribute

with a song.

When the roar of a dropped wave

breaks into it,

pour meted words

of sea-hawks and gulls

and sea-birds that cry

discords.

    WHITER

    than the crust

    left by the tide,

we are stung by the hurled sand

    and the broken shells.

    We no longer sleep,

    sleep in the wind.

    We awoke and fled

    through the Peiraeic gate.

    (Peiraeic gate

If wind sleeper=wind, then it means windy:-

of the weather with a lot of wind;-eg:- has got a windy day

of a place has got a lot of wind to a windy city, sea beach etc.

if wind = water= another story, very unclear in the poem; You find out yourself !

windy --windier--windest of weather has got:-

(1)will move sea wave too and fro

(2)will wake up and move everywhere

    (3)will carry ship up cliff

    (4)will roaring,moving in the wind

(5)sea birds can't fly without the wind !
