can you bake cheesecake ontop of cake?

Is there a way to bake a cake on the bottom and a cheesecake on top in the same pan

    Yes. Cook it at 350F middle rack with a roaster of boiling water on the rack underneath. It'll take 55-65 minutes or more. It's done when the cake portion is baked clean through (use a long skewer to check the bottom). The top will brown and puff because of the leaveners underneath and possibly crack, but don't worry about it. You want the cheesecake part to still be jiggly in the inch diameter in the middle. Turn off the oven, crack it open, leave an hour.

    edit: The cheesecake won't be as pretty as if as you'd done it lower temp in a water bath, but if you're doing carrot cake/cream cheese with some swirls it still looks good. If you're making one of those layer cakes with cheesecake in the middle, I recommend sticking with separate baking pans because they need to be flat.
