3 months in Japan (home stay)?

Next year in March, Im staying with my home stay for 3 months. How much money should I bring with me and any advice on the language? Ive been learning Japanese for 4 months. I know Hiragana, katakana, and basic phrases. I would like to work on my grammar and start on Kanji. Any advice on how to do that? Thank you!!

If food and others are already covered, $300 per month is enough to have some fun.
