How much Kanji do you really need to know for the Japanese language?

I know Hiragana and Katakana, which seemed reasonably basic, but what do I need from Kanji? I've looked around and some places say you need about 2,000 symbols for it, but then some places say you only really need about 1,000. So how much is actually relevant? Also, would it be better to learn Japanese in Romaji, then research the symbols or should I learn Kanji, then get onto the actual language?
