In Man of Steel, why did they have to 9/11 all of Metropolis?
I mean who would even want to live in Metropolis after Superman destroyed an enter downtown.
Something that takes generations to build up!
In my home city; greatest city on Earth in our opinion here; Sweet Home Chicago, one of the cities (the other being New York) that has skyscrapers so tall, we laugh at how puny the skyscrapers are in other American cities.
Many of those skyscrapers here in Chicago and there in New York were built almost a century ago!
AND IT WAS JUST SUPERMAN AND ZOD!!!!
Also those aliens vs Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Hulk (and two others who I won't mention because they don't have superhuman strength, well nether does Iron Man, but he has the suit) . . . they didn't even do nearly that match damage to New York.

The Destruction of Metropolis will be a future plot point in the later DC films. It seems that in the new film "Batman V Superman", there will be protests against Superman for his part in the Metropolis battle.
(As a sidenote, Chicago was used as Metropolis during the filming of "Man of Steel")
As for the NYC battle in "Avengers", according to disaster experts, the costs of the battle was $160 billion. For comparison, The 9/11 attacks cost $83 billion.
