Is the Spread of Ebola directly due to Republican Cuts to CDC Budget as the NIH and CDC told Senate Committee?

The Senate asked in a recent hearing and got an earful. Dr. Beth Bell, director of the CDC's National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases testified that the budget cuts allowed the epidemic to explode in Africa. "If even modest investments had been made to build a public health infrastructure in West Africa previously, the current Ebola epidemic could have been detected earlier, and it could have been identified and contained." Or you could ask NIH Director Francis Collins.

"NIH has been working on Ebola vaccines since 2001. It's not like we suddenly woke up and thought, 'Oh my gosh, we should have something ready here,'" Collins told the press on Friday. "Frankly, if we had not gone through our 10-year slide in research support, we probably would have had a vaccine in time for this that would've gone through clinical trials and would have been ready."

Clearly, these Republican budget cuts have stymied the U.S.'s response to the crisis. Because the private sector isn't going to invest the millions necessary into finding a vaccine or a treatment for Ebola, the response falls largely on the U.S.

What's happening in West Africa now, and the cases that have come home, is this the inevitable result of Republican playing politics with the budget?

Absolutely the GOP has "culpability dirt" on their hands because they refused to discuss across the board spending cuts (sequester) ...

"The ad describes how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saw its discretionary funding cut by $585 million from 2010 to 2014 and the National Institute for Health has faced $446 million in cuts during the same period."

The same thing happened w/ Benghazi because spending cuts diminished security.

The GOP thinks less is more ... they also think slashing education funding is going to make students learned.

It's a story so repetitious, it's like a broken record. The GOP wants the rest of us to sacrifice while they promote the wealthy.

The rep strategy is obvious to the rest of us. They want the painful budget cuts associated to the dem president and when unsavory events arise f/ the decreased spending, they can blame him again. Unfortunately, this is over the head of the typical rightie.

Where was all that right wing spending cuts when gwb was at the helm? ... he signed every spending bill to cross his desk.

It is true that spending for the CDC has dipped ever so slightly since 2011, but the cuts followed years of massive increases. Overall, since 2000, CDC outlays have almost doubled, from $3.5 billion to $6.8 billion (in 2014 constant dollars). Moreover, in January, the Republican-controlled House actually passed legislation that increased CDC spending for 2014 by $567 million — $300 million more than was requested by President Obama.

It’s not that the CDC hasn’t had money, it’s that the money has been spent on things that have little or nothing to do with the agency’s mission of protecting Americans from health threats.

The USA alone should have been building infrastructure in a foreign country? Did you know that Obama's proposed budget gave steeper cuts than the sequester caused? Or how about where the CDC did spend their money? Studies on street lights and childhood obesity as if we don't know what causes that? This is bureaucracy failing as usual.

Ps: there's been no budget passed since Obama became president. Although he did sign into law the sequester.

Ahhh ok, the cut they are referring to was because of sequestration. It was in fact a budget cut brought up by Obama and had gone through congress and the senate.. Harry Reid's Senate. Signed into law by Obama..This goes to show you, how easily manipulated the left is and what the politicians on the left think of their constituency. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budget_sequestration_...
