動詞英文文法

1.____________ the school rules, you won't be punished.

2.____________ the school rules, students should be taught and trained.

(A.)Follow (B.)Following (C.) By Following (D.) To follow

1.請問這兩題的答案應該怎麼選呢?為什麼?

2.還有為什麼這些句子都沒有所謂的連接詞呢?不是說兩個句子要連起來都要有連接詞嗎?這個觀念正確嗎?

希望能有英文大師為我解惑~謝謝

1._ Follow_ the school rules, you won't be punished.

This is an imperative sentence (祈使句), you usually start with a verb. It means "遵循校規,你就不會受到懲罰!"

2._ To Follow_ the school rules, students should be taught and trained.

For this sentence, it is to emphasize "To follow the school rules", so this infinitive phrase gets placed at the beginning of the sentence. If I rewrite it as:

Students should be taught and trained to follow the school rules. (應該教和訓練學生遵守學校規定)

then you will be able to understand it better.

    還有為什麼這些句子都沒有所謂的連接詞呢?不是說兩個句子要連起來都要有連接詞嗎?這個觀念正確嗎?

Not all the time. The above two questioned sentences are the examples. A conjunction (連接詞) is a joiner, a word that connects (conjoins) parts of a sentence or words. For examples:

They sang and danced all night. (connect "sang" and "danced")

Either you or I am to go (connect "you" and "I")

It is hot in summer here, but it is not cold in winter. (connect two clauses).

    Beth's suggestion:

Following the school rules, you won't be punished.

She (or He) suggests to use participle phrase to modify the verb "punished".

This is similar to the second sentence.

However, I think, using imperative sentence can make the point stronger!

AP sounds like a rebellion type of student! I was used to be one, now, get too old, because I cannot run faster than my teacher.

    Beth is right!

    It doesn't matter if it's a command.

If you use "follow", then it's a compound sentence, which requires a conjunction after the comma.

    1. (When) following the school rules, you won't be punished.

=You won't be punished when you follow the school rules.

    前面當修飾語的rolling ~是分詞構句,不是附屬子句。連接詞可加,可不加。加上時與主句的關係會更清楚。

    2. By following the school rules, students should be taught and trained.

=Students should be taught and trained by following the school rules.

    前面當修飾語的by rolling ~是介系詞片語,不是附屬子句。

    3.兩個子句(含以上)才用連接詞、連接副詞、或分號等連接起來。

Follow the school rules, you won't be punished.是一個run-on sentence。

應寫作:Follow the school rules, or you will be punished.用對等連接詞。

Following the school rules per se is a punishment by its own right.

Following the school rules, you won't be punished.

Follow the school rules, and you won't be punished.

    2014-10-01 11:41:44 補充:

To follow the school rules, students should be taught and trained.

= Students should be taught and trained to follow the school rules.

By following the school rules, students should be taught and trained.

= Students should be taught and trained by following the school rules.

    However,

    2014-10-01 11:43:04 補充:

"Students should be taught and trained under the school rules." would be a better sentence.

    2014-10-01 11:46:59 補充:

The reason is, "Who should follow the school rules?" Teachers? or students?

So, if you say "Students should be taught and trained by following the school rules."

Since the subject is "students", this sentence is not so straightforward to understand.
