Why do feminists say that feminism is just belief in equality between sexes?

Standard feminist statement: Do you believe all men & women should be treated equal.

If you say yes, you are a feminist.

But isn't feminism much more than that? It's adherence to a lot of ideas like: patriarchy, privilege, rape culture, etc, etc. It's more than belief in equality, its adherence to a dogma.

Feminism at it's base is about an end to discrimination and a level playing field and a choice for women. To understand the need for feminism, why there hasn't been a level playing field for women and how to move forward looking at concepts like patriarchy, privilege, and rape culture helps but this is not necessary - only the idea of equality is.

    here's the root

in the past, women are being treat less equal to men.

So feminist tried to boost women to being *equal* to men. Which is why the definition hold the word "equality" , by making one gender to be equal the other.

However, now, since both genders are about equal. Feminist can't not just change their name into "Equalism" now is it? It's a name that hold for near century. Plus, rape still happened pretty frequent. In some countries, women still being treat less equal. I doubt they gonna change the name anytime soon or never. Equality is, in fact, impossible. Make it as close to equal as possible, but there will still be fighting over it. But remember, none can exist without the other.

However, some feminists went extreme and become misandry. It getting biased and prejudiced. So, in conclusion, there are many type of feminists. In the old definition, it's did aimed for equality.

Yes it is, or at least it's core is about a belief of equality between sexes.

Patriarchy, rape culture, male privilege, are attitudes that would not exist in a equal society, so more of the feminism in the united states today at least is just about trying to change attitudes. (whether you think those attitudes exist or not is another story) Of course I'm excluding the extremist when I say this.

I don't think a belief in equality makes you anything but a believer in equality. Any rational person would want the genders to have equal treatment. Its why the us exists for citizens to have freedom. Why should men be the only ones who benefit.. Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean your right..

Feminism is a belief that all people (man, woman, black, white, old, young, gay, straight, etc) are equal. Those other things (patriarchy, privilege, rape, etc.) are all parts of some feminists beliefs but not all feminists beliefs. There are many types of feminists. Even if you don't believe in any of those things, as long as young think that all people should be treated equally, you are a feminist.

Feminists have lobbied for and won dozens of polices that advantage women over men and are not equal. They claim to be about equality, because it paints them in a better light than admitting the seek advantages for women.

    Yes.

Feminism is desirable, a neccesity, but not the Extremism.

Nowadays, extremism factor involved in feminism makes the idea biased, partial, one sided.

Idea of feminism should have justification.............................................. for both genders.

"why do feminists say that feminism is just a belief in equality between sexes"...because that's what it is, anything less than that or the opposite, isn't really feminism

    • Patriarchy and rape culture are things that feminism seeks to abolish in its quest for equality. You can't have equality if you cling to those.
