Computers (whether laptop or desktop) have a set maximum amount of memory that they can accommodate. If your laptop has less RAM than the maximum amount that it can accommodate, you can add RAM by installing a "larger" stick of RAM ("larger" meaning "more capacity").

A quick-n-easy way to find out how much RAM your laptop computer has and how much it can accommodate (if you're using Microsoft Windows) is to go to http://www.crucial.com/ and use their "System Scanner" to determine how much RAM is installed and how much RAM your computer can accommodate.

The company doesn't force you to buy the RAM from Crucial. You can write down the information provided by the "Crucial System Scanner" and go to your local computer store to buy RAM that matches up to the recommendations provided by the scanner (which you might want to do if you want the RAM immediately, rather than waiting for Crucial to ship it).

Usually you can, but whether it's worthwhile depends on what you have.

Sometimes you can't though, for various reasons, including a single RAM slot and a soldered RAM socket.

Depends on how old the computer is and how much memory you want but yes you can always add memory.
