# chance of rain question?

if there is a 70% chance of rain in 2 hours. then what is the chance of rain for the second hour?

Please let me know how you figure it out.. thank you!

The percentage of a chance of rain is determined by the probability of precipitation. Probability of precipitation is the probability that precipitation will fall at any point, averaged over the forecast area.

• You take the probability it won't rain in the 1st hour (30%) and multiply it by the probability it won't rain during the 2nd hour

P (no rain in either hour) = 0.30 * 0.30 = 0.09

P(rain in 2nd hour) = 1 - 0.09 = 0.91
