Another significant contributor to the particular toxicity of sexual trauma occurring in military contexts is that survivors are often relatively young at the time of their experiences This creates complexities for several reasons. First sexual harassment and assault are interpersonal traumas—perpetrate by another human

being, often by a close friend or intimate partner—that involve a profound violation of boundaries and personal integrity. Particularly for individuals that are young, these types of experiences send confusing messages about what is acceptable

and expected behavior from a trusted other, what rights and needs people have relationships, and what is “theirs” versus publicly accessible. confusion about boundaries may be further exacerbated by the military context where individual needs are often secondary to those of the larger unit.

As such, sexual trauma often has significant implications for survivors’subsequent relationships and understanding of themselves, and thus their functioning on a daily basis. Second, many survivors (regardless of age) find their prior ways of managing distress inadequate when faced with the intense emotions and other reactions associated with experiencing trauma. This is particularly likely to be true for survivors who are young adults in their late teens or early 20s, or those who are survivors of childhood experiences of abuse or other trauma, as they often do not have a fully developed repertoire of coping strategies. Without effective strategies for maintaining internal homeostasis, these individuals are especially vulnerable to developing mental health and other subsequent difficulties. They may also find themselves drawing on less developmentally advanced coping strategies such as dissociation, behavioral acting out, cutting or other forms of self-harm,which can themselves further impair functioning and health.
