Managers and starting rotation?

Can a manager switch his starting rotation around in the regular season whenever he wants or is it only during the all star break?

Starting rotations are changed when required mainly due to an injury to one of the starters. It's unusual for a starting pitcher to be moved up in the rotation with less than the usual 4-5 days rest between starts. A "spot starter" comes in from either the bullpen (middle reliever) or can be called up from the AAA team.

  • The manager can start who he wants, whenever he wants. He could start the same pitcher four days in a row if he wanted to, though he wouldn't be a manager very long if he did.

The manager will usually alter the rotation to give a pitcher extra rest before the break or to make sure his best starter doesn't have to pitch in the ASG by starting him the final day before the break. He'll also alter the rotation late in the season, if he's not fighting for a playoff spot, so his best starters will be ready to go in the postseason.

Any player on the active roster can be assigned to play any position for any game. The line up for a specific game becomes official at the pregame plate meeting when the manager hands the lineup card to the home plate umpire.

From that point forward, the substitution rules apply. When the game is over everything starts over and the manager can set any lineup for the next game.

Each day is a new game. The starting lineup can be changed at any time during the season.
