adding to what Ramblin' Man has already said, also check out Jerry Jeff Walker (an older artist) as well as a couple of more contemporary artists I love, Hayes Carll and Randy Rogers Band. Also check out Jason Isbell (sometimes billed as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit). His CD "Southeastern" is amazing.

Mary Chapin Carpenter and Lucinda Williams are both great, and fall into a category of "alternative" country (which basically just means country that isn't pop).

Here are a few examples of artists I've mentioned:

Jason Isbell - "Cigarettes and Wine"

Randy Rogers Band - "Steal You Away"

Mary Chapin Carpenter - "The Calling"

Lucinda Williams - "Are You Alright"

Hayes Carll - "Easy Come Easy Go"
