the first major protest of the civil rights movement occured in what state?
I read that it was in Montgomery, Alabama but now I'm unsure because I saw that it was in Mississippi.

Most history texts attribute the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1956 as the first major mass protest of the Civil Rights Movement.
It should be noted that other events such as the boycott of Harlem, NY businesses that refused to employ Blacks (1945-46) and the integration of "white-only" Central High School in Little Rock, AK (1957) occurred about the same time frame. But the Montgomery bus boycott represented the first mass nonviolent protest designed to overcome a legally adopted segregation statutory mandate.
