In Greek mythology, Eris was known as the goddess of discord, strife and chaos.
Her other siblings were Ares, Hephaestus, Hebe, Eleithya, and Enyo.
The story of Eris would not be complete without relating any one of her infamous endeavours.
It all started when Peleus and Thetis were getting married on Mount Olympus.
All the gods and goddesses were invited, except Eris-the goddess of discord.
She then started her plans to cause strife.
Eris got hold of a golden apple and wrote " Kallisti " on it, which in Greek means " To the fairest ".
It caused a great stir among the three goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
Thus, it began the slow of the Trojan War.Source(s): For more information; please refer to : http://www.theoi.com/ http://www.greekmythology.com./ http://en.wikipedia.org/eiki/

Eris, Greek goddess of Chaos, Strife, and Discord.
Translated into Latin as Discordia.
From the Wikipedia page it looks like some may have believed there were two different goddesses by the same name. Sort of a duality thing, with "good" discord and "bad" discord.
