Does Microsoft Security essentials scan/remove adware?

Other night I was on a site I frequent all the time, Never had a problem. When page poped up & said my video layer was outdated. I clicked on download latest version. Ended out having to download several other things. None of these things turned out to be free so i removed all the programs I downloaded.

Since than I have had problem with ad pages/new tabs/pop ups on some sites. Never had an issue with this before. Some sites are really annoying to get on at moment but were all fine until other night.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials & did a full scan. No threats were detected & it says Its up to date

Someone suggested I download adware cleaner but I've also been told you shouldn't have more than one Anti-virus/malware/adware program on your computer

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

    1) avoid microsoft security essentials

    2) if a page pops up and asks you to install or update. close it. i would say you have installed some unwanted software

malaware bytes antimalware is quite good, as is sophos free antivirus removal tool (i use both). they aren't a replacement for normal antivirus, just tools you run to scan your system

if you want free antivirus avoid microsoft security essentials and avg. avast and avira are pretty good

for paid, kaspersky, sophos, webroot are all quite good

You were advised correctly - DO NOT have 2 A-Vs on your system at one time - they will conflict.

    AdwCleaner is not an A-V.

    Download it from here:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleane...

    Also use Malwarebytes

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/

    Use the FREE version.

Install > Update > Run it.

Let it delete all that it finds - you will need to OK this.
