It was explained pretty easily in the prequels.

Fear leads to hate. Hate leads to anger. Anger leads to suffering.

Darth Vader was afraid to lose his mother who he loved. Fear.

She died and he took his first step to the dark side by killing women and children. Anger.

He pledged himself to grow stronger to protect his loved ones.

Darth Vader was afraid to lose Padme during child birth. Fear.

He vowed to do any evil deed necessary to save her. Even killing children and Obi-wan. Anger.

    She died. Suffering.

Because ONE Jedi grew up with a mother and loved deeply, he caused the entire Jedi order to crumble, murdered hundreds, and turned a republic into a galactic empire.

Because love causes doubt. Doubt causes weakness. Weakness causes failure.

Because it's corny, distracting, and gets you torn apart and turned into a sith lord.

I mean, that basically the gist of it.
