Answer is D because terracing reduces soil loss by water erosion on hill slopes. Composting is a way to recycle farm organic wastes so to reduce external inputs such as fertilizers.

A is not the answer because fragile ecosystems should be left alone. Human interference can easily destroy the system beyond repair.

B is too vague. Large scale cattle farming can be sustainable through rotational grazing but large scale farming ala intensive farming can be very detrimental to the environment. It depends on the management. As no information is given, B is too vague/general and not the answer.

C is also not the answer because it is deforestation by burning -- very non environmental friendly and after a few years, the land is abandoned.

THE correct answer is (d) terracing and gradual composting. "gradual composting" requires elaboration. it should ultimately achieve the complete recycling of agricultural wastes and the maintenance of an optimal mycorrhyza regime. it also accommodate a multiple cropping land use and optimal water management.

    (c) Slash and burn shifting cultivation is a much maligned system. in some circumstances, it is the most energy efficient system, but it requires a lot of cautious intelligence. the shifting circuit should be large enough to enable nature to reclothe the initial plot before the farmer returns to it. such systems have been sustained for over 5000 years in New Guinea, for example.
