Depending on whose definition of what constitutes a continent, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Navassa Island, and the Serranilla Bank appear to be the only possessions located on the North American continent. These possessions are insular and unincorporated possessions of the United States because they are not part of any state or the District of Columbia or any U.S. federal district. Like their counterparts in the Pacific, Guam and the Northern Marianas Island, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands maintain representation in the U.S. government. Currently no U.S. territories exists in North America; however Guantanamo Bay appears to be an exception but it is not. Cuba maintains sovereignty over base, but the United States exercises complete jurisdiction and territorial control over this part of Cuba by lease under the Platt Amendment. See also, Cuban-American Treaty (1903).

The U.S. has no "protectorates." And everything on the North American continent that is part of the U.S. is either a state or a constitutionally-created federal district, not a "possession."

Embassies in foreign countries have extraterritorial rights but are not considered legally part of the embassy's country.

    The United States of America.

  • you may check to see of the panama canal zone is still a protectorate but i believe that it was returned to the country of Panama sometime in the last decade. Alaska is a state since 1959 and is not a protectorate!
