I think you should sit there and explain to your friends the truth. The fact that your mum doesnt earn enough, you live in a small apartment and that you have to work and pay for all of your own things.
I am the same as you too. I am 18yrs old and I live in London with my parents and siblings. My dad works in a grocery store but he doesnt make much, my mum's a housewive and I have 6 siblings I am the eldest out of all of them. I always try and pay my own way, I dont give rent or anything but like I buy my own stuff and I hardly ever take a penny off my parents. I sometimes buy my mum and siblings stuff too.
Last year I worked for this charity and got paid cash in hand and then I worked for a luxury chocolate shop but they sacked me because I had to go on holiday for 3 weeks. I save half of my wages and the other half I use to buy clothes, shoes, toiletries, food etc.
I go University where i study Business Management and because my parents are on low income I get a Bursary Fund. In University you get about £1118 in 3 instalments every year after every 4 months to help pay for travel, lunch, equipment, clothes etc which is what I use the money for. This year I am looking for a job but I am living off my Bursary Fund money and trying to be careful with it, I have a budget that I try and stick too. Plus I live at home with my parents.
But I have to agree with some of the users here, why dont u cut back on the expensive products and help your mum out with the bills. Plus try and use less of your electrical items because they use up alot of electricity you know. Try and charge your phone at school and do all your homework in school so u can use ur laptop less at home. Maybe u can hunt around for coupons to use when doing your foodshopping so this way u can save some money and shop in the 99p store too. Plus try and buy your mum some nice things too, I am sure she hardly treats herself.
Good luck xxx
PS-What about ur dad? if ur parents are not together get him to pay some child support.
