Elliott Gould as Dr. Rosenthal, Calvin's therapist, encourages Calvin to write a page about anything not caring if it was bad. In psychotherapy, a therapist often wants the patient to feel at ease and just let his or her thoughts flow, revealing past childhood traumas and the like that may, inadvertently, surface. Calvin's therapist didn't believe in Ruby's existence so it was safe to write that she was a hooker, for example.
