You should shoot the possum. They have very short lifespans and generally die of the many diseases they are susceptible to. A bite from a possum could give various bad diseases to you or your dog, including rabies. If you do not have a gun, or live in an area where one cannot be used, you should contact animal control in your area. They should be able to take care of the problem or suggest a pest control service that can. They may be able to let you borrow a live-trap to trap the possum and transport it to them or an other appropriate location. If you don't want to kill the possum, you can try to contact a local farm, etc. that might be willing to let you release it there. However, some areas have laws against relocating wildlife animals. Bottom line: Don't continue to allow this animal near your dog. Your dog could probably even catch diseases from the possum's feces, depending on what the possum has.

Keep the dog in as much as possible at night, take it for walks so it can do it's thing, or find a place that the possum doesn't go and fence it off so your dog can go outside. If it gets bad call your local animal control officer and explain to them that the possum is threatening to attack your dog on a regular basis. They will likely come and move the possum to a place where it can't disturb anyone.

Watch your dog when you let it out. You should also make sure it is up to date on its shots like rabies incase the possum does bite it.

Don't leave your dog outside on its own at night?
What the hell is ungly?

Why is your little dog outside at night by itself?
Secondly, you can call animal control, and trap it. Or buy a big trap at your hardwear store, capture it, and take it miles away...and I do mean miles, and release it in a wilder area.

Can we say "animal neglect"?
You should not be leaving your poor, innocent dog out at nighttime.
