Yes, masturbation is a sin, in fact a mortal sin. Actually it is a sin for everyone, but many people don't care or have convinced themselves otherwise.
Sex is sacred and holy. Sex is meant to unite a husband and wife as one flesh, and for procreation Both aspects must be present in order for sex to be as God designed. Masturbation is neither of these things, it is selfish and sterile.
Masturbation is a misuse of your sexuality. It also usually involves fantasies or pornography, which are also sinful, in that they objectify other people.
The Catechism states:
By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action. The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."

The current pope said
what matters is the search for spirituality not a list of good or bad actions.
If you masturbate, what then, are you hurting anyone, are you defying God? Probably not.
If you masturbate instead of doing your homework, meeting a girl, or helping people, then it is bad.

Minister here.
There is nothing about masturbation in the bible.
And "it is not a sin".
Never, has been a sin.
Never, will be a sin.
That is a "Catholic tradition", with "no justification, found in the bible".
The Catholics, "made that up".
Just so more Catholics are created.

The subject isn't mentioned by name in the Bible.
However, we can assume that it may fall under other principles.
