4^2 means you multiply 4 two times. 4^2=16. When the exponent is negative, you reciprocate it. For instance, 2^-2=1/4. 3^-1= 1/3. One of the rules for exponent is if one exponent is inside the parentheses and another one is outside the parentheses, you can multiply the exponents. For instance, in your case, it is (4^2)^-4=(4)^-8.

Follow the order of P.E.M.D.A.S. which is Parentheses, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. You could remind yourself as People Expose My Daily Attribute Skills (I made that up).

    (4^2)^-4=

    16^-4=1/65536

    Hopefully, that helps you.

    Hooah!

    (4^2)^-4

    =1/((4^2)^4

    =1/(4 x 4)^4

    =1/(16)^4

    =1/(16 x 16 x 16 x 16)

    =1/65536
