The Middle East and dry the river are very good. I'd recommend a band called the national (prob heard of them). Another band I'd recommend is the gaslight anthem (my fav band). They're basically a punk rock band that blends elements of blues and folk into their work. Their lyrics are too intelligent to put them in that '**** the system' punk category though. Their songs, mostly on The 59' Sound create fictional stories filled with references to things from Charles Dickens novels to Counting Crows and Bob Dylan songs.

Arlo Guthrie is a unique mix of spoken word and folk.

edit: Well, now that I think about Ramblin Jack Elliot, change "unique" to "rare and precious".
