Do tellers have to process ach transfers?
Is there any work required by personel or are ach transfers completely automatic?

A lot of the big transactions (direct deposits, monthly billings, etc.) are all batched up and are processed automatically. Some human intervention is required to handle the exception items sometimes, where a transfer rejects for some reason (accounts on hold, insufficient funds, uncleared funds, invalid account numbers, etc.), but normally those are addressed by the company submitting the batch. The receiving bank just rejects them automatically with a code indicating the problem.
But there are some activities that are done manually. A customer who needs to do a transfer once in a great while might need assistance with it.
Tellers will not handle these, however. The banks have ACH staff that are monitoring the processes and addressing any issues.
