There were black students at Hogwarts, though not many of them had speaking roles, let alone lead roles. Dean Thomas, Lee Jordan, Angelina Johnson Weasley, Kingsley Shacklebolt and Blaise Zabini were played by black actors, as well as Bem, the "trying to catch smoke with your bare hands" kid. To be honest, the Harry Potter books/films didn't represent any minorities very well. I mean, look at Cho Chang. She's a walking fetishized stereotype. And let's not forget that the character of Lavender Brown was played by two different black girls until the character gained some importance and became Ron's love interest, at which time the filmmakers opted for another white actress.
