Real. Why would an ego like Bret Hart agree to that, before leaving for the competition? Secondly, when Hart moved A LOT of viewers went to WCW with him because they were pissed off at McMahon and Michaels. Why would WWF knowingly send all those viewers, dollars and ratings to the other program? They had to know that that would be a consequence of planning that and following through with it. I believe that McMahon hastily made that decision in the heat of the moment, not thinking of the consequences, and the rest is history. There is far too many negative consequences (which we saw play out in the months that followed) to have been planned.

    Staged.

Shawn Michaels was the only one not aware of what was going to happen because he's famously known for purposely fowling spots if he feels the other guy is getting more attetion.

Bret Hart, Vince McMahon, Triple H and Jerry Lawler were the only four that knew and orchestrated the screwjob.

Storyline. He went to WCW after that. And when he returned to WWE TV was on 2010 and they said that it was his first TV appearance since the Montreal Screwjob. Bret Hart has appeared a bunch of time, including the WWE HOF
