Sure. Because EVERYONE is treated better in non-Sharia countries. Centuries of civil strife in Europe has brought about the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason and Liberty. Sadly, not for every single person and not for all persons all at the same time; but in general people in Europe are better off.

Added @Meggy: You know, you might want to narrow it down to one or two countries rather than trying to tackle the 'whole' 1st and 3rd worlds.

There's several contributing factors, although economy probably makes the most notable difference; women in first world countries are educated alongside their male counterparts and therefore are in a better position to get a paying job, although it should be noted that a poorer country doesn't necessarily mean women are treated as second class citizens. I've been to Laos, and despite the third world status, I remember seeing women in jobs such as managing a hotel or an Internet cafe which suggests equal treatment.

Government plays a role too, in whether women receive the same rights as men.

Here's a great place to start. It's called laws. Laws in the USA are written in favor of women. Men get sh((i))tted on in this country whether women will admit it or not the people who are and have always been discriminated in this country is the male. Specifically, the WHITE MALE. Anyway, laws are the reason why women are treated better in 1st World Countries than 3rd world countries, which are now referred to as developing countries.

Usually third world countries are really big on the whole traditional things so that means that they believe in Patriarchy and women not being equal to men. Countries like Afghanistan and Egypt are islam countries and Islam laws for women are HORRIBLE. Feminism has majorly helped women in 1st world countries too.

Well for starters: Islam sucks. You can put that in the paper too :).

Also...when people have money they have more time for 'vanity' and as a result are wasting time in discussing useless things such as: "should a man open the door", "should we impose male tax" - idiotisms like that and not things that actually matter, such as: "how to buy medicines for our kid", "how to protect us from the Somali pirates" - those are real world threats that people in Africa are facing everyday, those are real problems compared to the overrated hysterical hype exhibited by the radical feminists from the '1st world'.

Again...Christianity is traditionally more tolerant at women compared to Islam and this has coincided for the most part with wealth in the '1st world'.

The feminist movement and technological progress combined. Medical improvements have lowered the risks in child birth as well as the infant mortality rate. In countries with a high infant and child mortality rate, women tend to have many more kids. Education or lack of it also plays a role in how women are treated.

Maybe you could spare a thought for the men in third world countries too - but I doubt your 'teachers' would appreciate that, since women are so much more important.

    There are many factors:

    - women's access to education

    - women's access to health care and birth control

    - the dominance of patriarchal religions in some countries

    - the persistence of traditions that cloister women

    - lack of real democracy, rule of law and rights

    - lack of economic opportunities
