Why was former presidential candidate John Kohn Kerry against the Iraq War in 2004?

During the 2004 presidential debates with former President George W. Bush, John Kohn Kerry said that he was against the war in Iraq. Why?

    Kerry was a Vietnam veteran who later became part of the "veterans against war" movement. He was pretty steadfast in that position until recently. Lately he has been publicly pushing for a war in Syria, and I'm not sure why; but I lost all my respect for him at that point.
