What do you think the confederate flag represents?

Southern pride. The northern states after the Civil War tried to lay all of the evils of the world at the feet of the southern states, and went about trying to punish them severely for having the audacity to secede from the union in the first place. Southern whites maintain even now that the original impetus for the conflict wasn't the issue of slavery...it was about their own right to self-determination, sovereignty, and governmental representation. Obviously, I am of two minds on the subject, but as a southerner myself, I can truly see their point (though I never have and never will fly a confederate flag). It does have an oblique association with racial hatred that is undeniable, but there is clearly more to the symbol than just that. SO, it doesn't bother me nearly as much as, say a swastika does. (Ironic, because a swastika was not originally a symbol of hatred, either).

States rights and fighting for equal representation in the legislative branch of the government. At least that is what it means to me. It kind of got hijacked by racist asshats in the 60's like the Swastika in Germany in the 30's.
