For a subject with a positive fluid balance (more volume gained than lost), every liter of gained volume (or fraction thereof) resulted in one kilogram subtracted from the subject’s weight to allow for calculation of a fluid-adjusted BMI (fluid-adjusted weight in kilogram/ [height in meters]2).

Alternatively, a subject with a negative fluid balance (more volume lost than gained) had weig ht added to the measured weight based on the balance of gained volume.
