Both were landmark cases before the United States Supreme Court which redefined the Constitutional test for determining what constitutes obscene material unprotected by the First Amendment.

They both dealt what was to be determined as "obsene" and what determined the Constitutional test to render such items as "obscene" per the First Ammendment Right to Free Speech. This was brought on in part by the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

It's a little complicated but this is what they both link upon. I will come back and see if you have updated the question in the event you need further information.

I wonder why it took till 2003 for such a reasonable law to be passed. The government has no place in the sex lives between consenting adults.
