    They had to keep warm for as long as possible. If they had jumped earlier then they would have waited the extra couple minutes that the lifeboats would have to wait for the rest of the ship to go under before they could try to rescue anyone. Basically, say the ship goes under in two minutes, and it takes 5 minutes for the lifeboats to go over. The lifeboats have to wait two minutes because the sinking ship can sink the lifeboat from suction. And with the freezing cold water, it's safer to be on the boat for 2 minutes and 5 in the water then to be all 7 minutes in the Atlantic.

    They were in the North Atlantic in the middle of the night. The water was absolutely freezing; being in the water for too long would have caused hypothermia and eventually death. The boat was safer than the water.

    To stay out of the water so they wouldn't get hypothermia
