i haven't worn my retainers in a long time?

the lower and upper teeth are starting to shift a bit and I have been starting to wear them again after a few months. they are really tight and don't fit all the way but they work. is this a bad idea or should I keep trying to fix this problem myself. thanks.

If the retainers are really tight and "don't fit all the way", then you shouldn't be using them to try and make your teeth straight again.

Make an appointment with your orthodontist and take your retainers with you. They may need to be adjusted or you might need new ones.

Sandy is correct. You need to get the retainer adjusted.
