What does a petroleum engineer do?

I have no clue what a PE does, though it seems to be challenging.. so what subjects should someone who wants to get into PE be good at, what is required of a PE, and what sort of income should be expected?

Please and thank you.

Petroleum engineers help find oil and gas for the country’s energy needs.

Petroleum engineers typically do the following:

Design equipment to extract oil and gas in the most profitable way

Develop ways to inject water, chemicals, gases, or steam into an oil reserve to force out more of the oil

Develop plans to drill in oil and gas fields, and then to recover the oil and gas

Make sure that wells, well testing, and well surveys are completed and evaluated

Use computer-controlled drilling or fracturing to connect a larger area of an oil and gas deposit to a single well

Make sure that oil field equipment is installed, operated, and maintained properly

Oil and gas deposits, or reservoirs, are located deep in rock formations underground. These reservoirs can only be accessed by drilling wells, either on land or at sea from off-shore oil rigs.

Once oil and gas are discovered, petroleum engineers work with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation of the rock containing the reservoir. They then determine drilling methods, design and implement the drilling equipment, and monitor operations.

The best techniques currently being used recover only a portion of the oil and gas in a reservoir, so petroleum engineers also research and develop new ways to recover the oil and gas. This helps to lower the cost of drilling and production.

I honestly think that this career is wayyy too intense. Petroleum engineering is something you must love to do. Because you work long hours around 50-80 and spend long hours away from home because you are either at your office or you work on site. You will have to travel where there is oil . You must know rigorous amount of math formulas, like calulus, matrix algebra, and other subjects like science biology, physics. Its really a hard career but it pays well median 110.000 a year. However beware this career is not family friendly so dont expect to have a life doing this. Only do it if you love it and its your passion.

This is so true about the stress of this job and having no life. I just got out of a brief relationship (did I mention brief) LOL, with a man who is a PE. He says he loves his job. Unfortunately this job did not leave much time for him to date or be in a serious relationship as he thought he may be. Works many long hours- many times 12-14 hrs, and travels often, many times without advanced notice. He was off on weekends but either tired or having his child every other weekend. Women beware if you're looking for love with someone of this occupation. It will take a lot of patience, confidence, and trust to put up with this. I learned the hard way. It is a cool job that fascinates me though.
