buying a used car... what's the basic information I need to look on a Carfax?

Also, is a Carfax necessary? information on a carfax are very confusing for a not so savvy like me. Can I get the necessary information free from a government site for instance?

Getting a vehicle report is not necessary but might help. You may want to try this coupon code from VinAudit.com. Pay only $4.99. http://www.vinaudit.com/coupon=Y_50OFF

No, you can't get a car's history on a government site. But even Carfax or Autocheck will not tell you much about all the things you need to know to buy a car. A good mechanic's inspection is the best way to know about a used car, BEFORE you buy.

Agree with Tiggy here.. First off, carfax has only whats REPORTED TO CARFAX.. Only sure thing on Carfax is how many registered users. Get it checked by your mechanic... Not the sellers.
