Well it depends on what you like to see and do. Halifax is a great walking city but it's also hilly. If you like historic things you can walk to the Citadel, the old fort in the centre of the city. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is off the harbourfront boardwalk and has great exhibits about the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion, which killed 2000 people in 1917. If that's not your cup of tea, you can follow the boardwalk all the way to the casino. The best shopping within easy walking distance is on Spring Garden Road, and you can stop at the Public Gardens, a beautiful Victorian garden. You can also walk or take a cab to Point Pleasant Park, which has miles of walking trails. There's also a small beach there, in the shadow of a container terminal. There are lots of shore excursions you can arrange, including the drive to rocky Peggy's Cove. Its lighthouse is one of the most photographed scenes in Canada.

  • I have done that cruise twice. In Portland you can walk off the ship right into the town. But a better thing to do is get what they call the "pink bus" tour which will drive you around town to see the city. You can get tickets for it about a block from the pier; just ask someone where to get the tour bus. The tour lasts about an hour and they depart from that same place about every hour.

In Halifax and St john you can also get the Pink Bus tour for about $30 per person. In St John they actually have three route and your tour ticket lets you ride. I Halifax you can walk from the ship to some attractions like Public Park and also to the Halifax Boardwalk that is just a couple blocks from where the ship docks. Do a Google search of your port stops and find a map of each so you will know where things are that you want to walk to see.

If your cruise stops in Bar Harbor, me you can take the tender boat to shore and walk around the town. But if you do go there take the tour that goes to Arcadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain, nice scenery. Also, do the Lobster Bake, it;s fabulous.
