Why does British English spell the American three letter word for derriere and add an "r" and?

add an "e" and take out one of the two "s"s behind the only a? Sorry to write so cryptically, but I'm trying to conform to the rules.

Update:

Hey, how come Min can write ***?

Update 2:

So spacing the letters works? Let's see....a s s

Update 3:

No...not the same

Same as what min said. Making an *** of yourself means being a bit of a donkey. Fanny means something else over here too

That is strange, why can min write ***?

    ***

    ass

  • Because an a$$, or an eeyass as you would pronounce it, is a word for a dawnkey, not for an ar$e, which goes way back to Middle English, if not to Old English (Anglo Saxon).

Example : 'wheatear' (the name of a bird) is derived from white & ar$e.

Apparently the presence of an R in the word for bottom goes as far back as the Proto Indo-European 'orsos'. But hey, what does any of that matter to a Johnny come lately country like the USA. Eeyass is correct ....

    (I can't even write a$$ using a dollar sign (heh) for s.)

Hi. It's also pronounced differently. Americans say Ahce (***) and Brits pronounce it as Arghhse (****). You can hear the 'R' in the british version. Agreed with the poster above. *** is a donkey. Donkeyhole! Lol.

After the American revolution many Americans were so bitter and anti-English they changed the spellings of many words. Also since the 1780's both languages slowly evolved differently.

Perhaps American speakers need two asses. It's good to put your **** on an *** but how can you put your *** on an ***.

Ours is a nice ****, ours is!

Oh, if your *** was as good an **** as ours.

Better put your bum on a donkey.

    british doesn't add an r.

american english removes it, just like it simplifies spelling of several other british words.

Simple... because an ass is a donkey and an arse is your backside.
