To discuss yours I think Oasis is worse than it seems, it's clever because the band started off as The Rain but when Noel joined it became Oasis which has an almost ongoing story. However it's a drink and some big boat thing as well, one word is hard to look up and it isn't very descriptive. The Beatles is actually a bit of a pun (took me ages to work out) on "beat"
I think bad band names are ones that are too long and confusing, difficult to google or just crass and something you can't say without sounding daft. Names that really don't fit with a band's music are also silly:
An*l C*nt - Seriously?! That's how you choose to define yourself?! Nobody can say that, it can't be said on the radio and your CDs are going to be censored. It's also childish and trying too hard to shock
!! - How the hell is that even pronounced or googled
Noah and the Whale - For a non-religious band this is misleading
Shed Seven - How glamorous!
Franz Ferdinand - Great band but the name is too daft. Naming yourself after a real person is never going to go well, especially when there is no real link.
The Courteeners - Nobody even knows how to pronounce it, too obviously a made up word
Elbow - Jesus
La Roux - "La" is singular, so people can't be blamed for thinking it's a solo act
Fun. - Really? How can anybody look you up
Panic! At the Disco - Unnecessary punctuation annoys me
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - No. Too long and it has his name in, may as well just call yourself "Noel Gallagher" or "High Flying Birds" why both? It's practically a solo album anyway
Sex Pistols - So famous, so definable and perfectly controversial without going too far
Owl City - Don't particularly like the band but have always had a soft spot for the name, you could make much of symbolism
Manic Street Preachers - Haven't a clue, love the band and love the name
Barenaked Ladies - Have a soft spot, sure it's ridiculous but it's so ridiculous it's brill, and the fact they were originally "Free Beer" is even better
Joy Division - Simple and fits the music, at the same time it's original and memorable without getting pretentious
Kasabian - Simple, original (or not well known) word, doesn't feel made up and seems to fit the Britpop/garage/rock sound, also sounds a bit like "kiss"
The Killers goes on both lists. If the idea of their first album being a concept album with an ongoing storyline featuring murder is correct then it is absolutely brilliant. If it isn't then the name doesn't fit the band's sound at all and is misleading and bad
Although, as Liam Gallagher once said a name is just a name. You can have a brilliant name and still make shite music or you could have the worst name in the world, if your music is good that's all that matters
