Why is there only 6 jurors in the Martin Vs. Zimmerman Case?

I find this odd because I thought a jury is supposed to have 12 main jurors and 2 backup jurors for a case? I've been to jury duty before and its usually 12 people chosen by the state with 2 back-ups

    1) It is not Martin v. Zimmerman. It is Florida v. Zimmerman.

    2) The number of jurors that a case has is up to the states themselves. I think Florida has six. However, most states will have twelve.

In the state of Florida, 6 jurors are only needed for 2nd degree murder charge.

2nd degree murder does not carry a life sentence, so there are only 6 jurors. 12 jurors only serve on criminal cases involving life sentences.
