I think WW III started in 1947, and was fought mostly on economic grounds, and through several proxy fights. It ended in 1990.

By another classification, I consider it to be the Second Oil War, The one starting in 1939-41 being the First. The Third Oil War, which we are currently in, coincided with the end of the Second by about fifteen years.
