Public Defenders (PDs) in the USA vs. the UK?

I have been debating back and forth with someone the judicial system in the US. They believe the US' judicial system is archaic and sets the accused up to have an unfair disadvantage from the beginning.... My questions are:

1.) Do Public Defenders receive more funding or get paid more in the UK than those in the US?

2.) Are the PDs in the UK able to provide a better defense for indigent persons than those in the US?

Thanks for your answers :)

I found out first hand. They work for the District attorneys office.
